This is a 50k (31.1 miles) ultramarathon to be run completely in the New River Trail State Park on the New River Trail.
All proceeds from the event will go to The National Committee for the New River (NCNR), a non-profit organization that protects, restores and educates about one of the oldest rivers in the world. NCNR works in all 3 states (North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia) of the New River’s watershed.
Additional contributions can also be made towards NCNR’s Volunteer Water Quality Monitoring Program. Look for this option on the active.com registration form.
This is a “green race.” We will use local, recyclable items and products from companies with “green” practices as much as possible. We will use minimal disposable materials and those that must be disposable we will choose recycled or recyclable in our area as much as possible. To this end we encourage use of hand held water bottles/waist packs whenever possible! When choosing materials, foods and supplies for aid stations and runner “giveaways” we are striving to have 75% of our goods come from either local manufacturers and/or growers (within 100 miles of course start) or from companies that have a demonstrated commitment to reducing their impact on the Earth. To our knowledge this is the first ultra/endurance event in the Southeast /Mid-Atlantic region that will be an intentional “green event.”

History
Race director, Annette Bednosky, has been a competitive ultrarunner for the past 5 years and is entering her 4th year on the Montrail National Team. Annette has run in 50+ races from 50k-100 mile events in 10 states and holds 11 current course records. When choosing this event to design and direct, Annette was striving to create an ultra in the southeast that would stand on its own as an event to train and focus on and also comes at a time of year that would fit into a runner who might be preparing for big events such as the Mountain Masochist 50 miler (3 weeks out) or JFK 50 miler (5 weeks out).
Although Annette personally prefers to run on technical trails, she does a fair amount of training on the New River Trail and thinks the surface of the trail is easy to run on and it’s flatness helps her develop her leg turnover. Annette would like more people to experience the joy of preparing for and participating in an ultramarathon and thinks this race would be good for people new to dirt and distance.
The New River Trail 50k is to be a green event, because Annette believes that all people, especially those of us who run in the woods (or mountains or desert) need to do what we can do to promote sustainable recreation in our outdoor and wild places. Even though we are a fringe sport, we can influence others to make good decisions when selecting products and behaviors that will be in good conscience hopefully move common practices of our sport.
UPDATES (August 6):
• As of August 1, 2008 we have 90 registered runners! With our increase to 125 as the 'drop dead limit', I think we are really going to (and already do) have an excellent field of runners! At this time, there are 36 women and 53 men signed up, with runners from 14 states. The age breakdown is 30 runners under age 40, and 59 runners that are 40+ years.
• Because of the awesome representation from runners in the 55+ age group (14 so far), I am working hard to add another prize category and at least offer prizes 2 places deep to male and female runners in the 55+ age group.
• On August 1st, the local newspaper near the race, The Galax Gazette, published a cool and informative article featuring local runner, Ed Hanks, and an overview of the event for readers. At this time, the story is not yet posted, yet if you are itching for something to do, go to www.galaxgazette.com and look for the headline: "In it for the long haul." Hopefully it will be online after the weekend...they did a great, enthusiastic job!
• Just a reminder to all to be practicing carrying fluids/fuel, as our aid
stations are an average of 5+ miles apart!• Also, remember that due to our insurance NO personal headsets on the
course. As a "1st time event" I take this rule seriously...and although in
the future USATF may reconsider it's restrictions, for now it is in place.
Please plan accordingly as the consequence will result in being DQ'd (disqualification).• As always, please contact me (Annette) with questions, concerns (or celebrations)!
UPDATES (July 25):
• Doing your first 50k and want some training ideas? Check out what Matt Sims has to say about training for The Stump Jump 50k at www.RockCreek.com.
• Dink Taylor has developed som 16-week 50K training plans based on the amount of mileage you can put in. They are planned for the Mountain Mist 50K, but can easily be adapted for this event!
• We have three registration scholarships available (waives the registration fee), although there may be more. These will go to folks that have some financial need. Please tell your friends and email the race director your request.
• We are proud to announce Clif Bar as a sponsor for the event. We'll be using Clif Bar's electrolyte driank at the aid stations. In addition, a limited number of their gels and shot blocks will be available at the aid stations. Check out their website (www.ClifBar.com) and products - this company does an excellent job of being "green" and inspring others to do the same!
• The New River Trail 50K is pleased to now be part of the 2008 Blue Ridge Cup! This is the largest race series in the southeast and is presented by The Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine (www.BlueRidgeOutdoors.com).
"The race calendar endures from March to December and runs the full spectrum of competition, from 5K to 24-hour relay. The Blue Ridge Cup Race Series is designed to operate a little like a Choose Your Own Adventure book. Pick your poison. Plot your course. We provide the list of approved footraces and you pencil them into your personal 2008 race schedule. Each event in the Blue Ridge Cup has been assigned a specific point value according to distance. In general, the more exhausted you feel when you cross that finish line, the more points you've probably earned for the effort. And the more miles you conquer throughout the season, the more points you'll squirrel away for the series. Here in the Blue Ridge we deal in the currency of sweat and raw ambition, and if you want to gain some purchase on the Cup then you had better start spending. Signing up to participate in the Blue Ridge Cup is absolutely FREE of charge, monetary or otherwise."
